Work Permits and Other Residence Facilities

WORKING IN UGANDA
all foreign nationals intending to work in Uganda must ensure that they are in possession of the relevant work permit  ONLY applied for online at www.visas.immigration.go.ug. The requirements for the different categories / classes of work permits are here below listed.

CLASS A (GOVERNMENT & DIPLOMATIC SERVICE)
NB: Applicants should be persons contracted for service in the Government of Uganda or diplomats accredited for service in Uganda.
Application requirements:

  • Attach photocopies of the passport
  • 2 passport size photos
  • Covering letter from the Embassy and a supportive letter from the ministry of Foreign Affairs-Note Verbale.

CLASS A2 (GOVERNMENT CONTRACTORS)
NB: Applicants should be persons on Government contracts, including persons serving in Government tertiary institutions.
Application Requirements:

  • Covering letter from the organization (Ministry, Department or Agency)
  • Copy of the contract with the Government institution

CLASS B (INVESTMENT IN AGRICULTURE)
NB: Applicants should be persons intending to invest in the business of agriculture or animal husbandry.
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Copy of the land tittle/ Agreement
  • Recommendation letter from LCs or RDC’s office from the area where the business is to be undertaken
  • Work plan/feasibility study of the project to be undertaken
  • Current Bank statement (last 3 months)
  • recommendation from Ministry of Agriculture (MAAIF)

CLASS C (MINING)
NB: Applicants should be persons intending to invest in the business of prospecting for minerals or mining in Uganda
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Copy of the land tittle/ Agreement
  • Recommendation letter from LCs or RDC’s office from the area where the business is to be undertaken
  • Proof of purchase of agricultural raw materials from Uganda
  • Current Bank statement (last 3 months)
  • A licence from Uganda Investment Authority

CLASS D (BUSINESS AND TRADE)
NB: Applicants should be persons intending to carry on the business or trade in Uganda
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Copy of certified Company Bank statement (last three months)
  • Copy of valid Trading license

CLASS E (MANUFACTURERS)
NB: Applicants should be persons intending to engage in manufacturing business in Uganda
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Copy of Uganda Investment Authority license
  • Current Bank statement (last 3 months)
  • Proof of land ownership/ Agreement

CLASS F (PROFESSIONALS)
NB: Applicants should be members of prescribed professionals intending to practice such profession in Uganda
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Proof of Registration certificate with relevant professional body in Uganda e.g Association of media practitioners in Uganda, Engineers Registration Board etc

CLASS G1 (VOLUNTEERS, NGO WORKERS, and MISSIONARIES)
  Application Requirements:

  • 2 passport size photos
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of NGO certificate
  • Criminal record report ( from home country ) or Interpol letter from home country )
  • Attach Covering letter from institution / NGO
  • Covering letter
  • Appointment letter
  • Qualifications

CLASS G2 (EMPLOYEES)
NB: Applicants should be persons intending to work as employees whether for gain or not in Uganda.
NOTE: Applicants under this category can only enter Uganda after grant and payment for their work permits
Application Requirements:

  • Valid Passport (bio-data page)
  • Recent Passport Size Photograph
  • Covering letter from the Agency
  • Valid Clearance letter from Interpol/ valid police clearance from the home country
  • Valid Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Current immigration status
  • Appointment letter from the organization
  • Certified copy of Qualifications (graduate certificate)
  • Proof of failure to employ a qualified Ugandan
  • List of employees in the company indicating nationality and position held
  • List of employees in the organization indicating nationality and position held.

NOTE: Applicants under this category can only enter Uganda after grant and payment of their work permits.

WORK PERMIT RENEWAL

  • Attach Covering letter from company
  • 2 passport size photos
  • Photocopies of permit in the passport and copy of bio-data page of the passport
  • Bank statement
  • Proof of Ugandans' trained
  • List of Ugandans' employed

CERTIFICATE OF RESIDENCE

  • 3 passport size photos
  • LC1 recommendation letter
  • Covering letter
  • Medical report
  • Copy of passport
  • Proof of ownership of property ( if any)

CR DUE TO MARRIAGE

  • Requirements as above plus:
  • Marriage certificate copy ( at least 3yrs)
  • Copy of spouse's Uganda passport

EMPLOYMENT OF EAC NATIONALS UNDER THE EAC COMMON MARKET PROTOCOL
Categories of workers allowed to work in Uganda under the EAC Common Market Protocol include Chairmen of companies; Civil engineers; Aircraft and ship controllers and technicians.

  • Applicant should fill work permit form and fulfill requirements under the specific category of work permit sought. ( Refer to categories above )
  • EAC nationals who obtain work of more than 90 days should apply for work permit within 15 days from date of concluding contract of employment.
  • Special pass should be sought for employment of not more than 90 days.
  • Special pass will be issued to EAC nationals pending issuance of work permits.
  • Employers should furnish immigration with annual return of EAC workers in establishment.
  • EAC workers who change employment should notify immigration within 15 days of change of employment and should apply for new work permits.
  • If a worker ceases employment, for which work permit was issued, he/ she must notify immigration within 15 days of cessation and apply for pass to stay in Uganda or leave the country.
